Noise as a signal in quantum devices

Fluctuations limit sensitive measurements, yet at the same time, noise can unravel effects that are concealed in the averaged signal. I will describe our recent work in this area and introduce several examples in which current noise conveys fundamental information including (i) studies of electronic current noise in nanoscale conductors generated by temperature difference or bias voltage, (ii) derivations of thermodynamically consistent quantum master equations, and (iii) discovery of bounds on ratios of fluctuations of output and input currents relevant for classical and quantum thermal machines.
