Presenter: Dr. Hanyu Zhu, Assistant Professor, the Department of Materials Science and NanoEnigneering, Rice University

Quantum materials is a rising field of research primarily driven by the perspective of enabling new quantum technologies. However, quantum materials research often relies heavily on knowledge of advanced quantum mechanics and condensed matter physics, that may appear remote from traditional materials science training. Are there simple conceptual ways to survey the recent quantum technologies, and identify the materials need, without deep background? What are the useful tools to quickly identify or modify quantum properties in a new material? In this seminar, I will first briefly introduce the history of quantum materials research, that are rooted in long-standing physical principles but increasingly call for material innovations. Then I will discuss categories of promising quantum technologies, and examples of corresponding quantum materials properties needed. Finally I will point out non-invasive means of characterization and manipulation to tackle the materials challenges. Overall, this talk will provide the structural overview of the course MSNE 512: Quantum Materials Engineering.
